Study Indonesian in PAAS

The Indonesian language is a variety of Malay and very closely related to Bahasa Melayu,
which is spoken in Malaysia, Brunei Darsalam, parts of southern Thailand and the southern
Philippines, and is also one of the official languages of Singapore. It is spoken by nearly one
quarter of a billion people and by approximately half the population of the Southeast Asian
region.

The Indonesian language program in PAAS offers a four-semester sequence of courses
designed to provide you with the fundamentals of the language and to equip you with a
speaking, reading and writing ability that can be used as an effective platform for further
study and, potentially, an internship or exchange experience in Indonesia.

In conjunction with the Australian Consortium for 'In-Country' Indonesian Studies (ACICIS - pronounced Ah-chee-chis, as an Indonesian would say it), the Department of Pacific and Asian Studies offers an opportunity for UVic students to study Indonesian language and culture in Yojyakarta, Indonesia's capital of arts, culture and history.
