Creating or renewing international agreements

Faculty and staff members interested in exploring a new international partnership are invited to liaise with the Office of Global Engagement.

New international partnerships may focus on students, staff, and faculty exchanges; articulation agreements; co-operative education; Erasmus+, double/dual degrees and other collaborations.

Prospective new partnerships go through an assessment process, which includes a number of considerations such as:

  • Support from a UVic department/school
  • Alignment with Faculty objectives
  • Alignment with the university's Strategic Plan and Global Engagement Strategy,
  • Benefits for the partner institution and UVic

Types of agreements

The following types of agreements are managed and coordinated by the Office of Global Engagement:

A non-binding expression of intent to collaborate. An MOU is used when the University as a whole is seeking the collaboration. It may include faculty-staff mobility or research exchange.

A non-binding expression of intent to collaborate. An LOI is used when a specific unit or faculty is seeking the collaboration.

A binding agreement that sets out the terms of engagement for specific activities between the partners (e.g. micro-certificates, TNE, short courses, executive education, etc.).

A binding agreement that sets out of the terms of engagement to send and receive students to complete a learning experience (typically includes academic course work, co-op, research or practicum placements).

A binding agreement that sets out the terms of collaboration for receiving fee-paying students as transfer students into third (or another) year to complete a UVic undergraduate degree. It might lead to a Joint or Double Degree Program, and might also include faculty-staff mobility or research exchange.

A binding agreement that sets out of the terms of engagement to send OR receive students to complete a learning experience. These agreements are used to formalize unidirectional student mobility arrangements (typically fee-paying).

A binding agreement that sets the terms of engagement to send and receive faculty-staff to complete teaching or learning experiences (training, course work, lectures, research, etc.).
