Physics (PhD)
In our research-focused PhD degree program, you’ll pursue one of four concentrations:
- Physics
- Physics with a concentration in astronomy
- Physics with a concentration in medical physics
- Physics with a concentration in ocean physics
Whichever concentration you choose, you’ll work within a community whose research covers a diverse spectrum of areas. You’ll work on a dissertation that will reshape our understanding of the universe. You will also complete supplemental coursework and a candidacy exam.

If you have applied for an NSERC or CIHR scholarship, you must submit your UVic application by December 1.
September entry
Most students start their programs in September. We encourage you to apply for September entry. The deadline is December 1 of the previous year.
For September entry, we will consider applications received between December 1 and August 1. These will not be given priority or considered for UVic entrance scholarships.
January and May entry
We may consider applicants for January or May entry in exceptional circumstances. You should submit your application for these entry points at least two months before the start of the term.
Visa processing times can vary, so we recommend applying early if you're an international applicant.
